Thousands Mourn Pope Benedict XVI
Approximately 65 000 mourners have come so far to view former Pope Benedict XVI as he lies in state at the Vatican.
Benedict, who shocked the world when he retired from the papacy a decade ago, passed away on 31 December 2022 at the age of 95.
Benedict XVI became the first Pope to resign in 600 years in 2013, citing ailing health.
Pope Francis will preside over Thursday’s funeral – this will be the first time that a Pope will be buried by his successor.
Benedict’s body is lying in St. Peter’s Basilica, his head resting on two satin pillows, dressed with a mitre, the peaked headgear of a bishop, and a red cloak. He also has a rosary clasped in his hands.
He will lie in state for viewing for the next three days.
